The Kid From The Big Apple bags PIFFA Supreme Best Screenplay Award

Malaysian film director and scriptwriter, Jess Teong nabbed the PIFFA Supreme Best Screenplay Award for her work, The Kid From The Big Apple. The PIFFA Supreme Awards was held on November 5 at Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) in conjunction with the PROFIMA International Film Festival and Awards.
The award ceremony was a prestigious event to recognize hard work and significant contributions of actors and actresses, film crews and stunt professionals from 11 different countries. The primary aim was to serve as a motivation for them to produce more high-quality creative contents and in turn generate higher revenue and ratings.

Along with Jess Teong, Mehran Kashani from Iran, Jack Neo, Ivan Ho and Link Sng from Singapore, Teong Hin Saw from Malaysia and Sang Man Kim from South Korea were nominated for the Best Screenplay category. Although The Kid From The Big Apple was Jess’ directorial debut, she made Malaysia proud by winning this award. While her film is an international phenomenon, Jess is still humble and stayed to her roots. In her winning speech she said, ““Each time I win an award, the first thing I would say is that this movie is from Malaysia.”
At the same event, one of the main casts of her movie, Hong Kong’s veteran star Ti Lung was awarded the PIFFA Supreme Lifetime Achievement Award; the highest and most prestigious recognition. With almost 50 years of acting experiences, Ti Lung is known for his many feature roles such as The Sentimental Swordsman, The Duel and A Better Tomorrow. When asked about his experience working with Malaysian film industry and director, Jess Teong, Ti Lung gushed,” Malaysia is filled with many talents as well as competent crew members. With so many cultures and languages, this country is on its way to becoming the next Hollywood!”

The Kid From The Big Apple was a huge success as it gathered over RM6 million in ticket, won the Best Child Actor and Special Jury at the 28th Malaysian film festival as well as Best Actor, Best Newcomer and Best Supporting Actress at the 2015 Macau International Movie Festival.

The much-anticipated sequel, The Kid From The Big Apple 2: Before We Forget is scheduled to hit cinemas nationwide on November 16, followed by other countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The story continues with Sarah Tan, who was also nominated for PIFFA Supreme Best Newcomer, exploring more sentimental scenes and cultivating her own personal emotions alongside Ti Lung. Shaun Tam, Ti Lung’s son will also be joining the cast-line up with Jason Tan and Debbie Goh.
